Case Study / A large central government agency
The client approached us to address the need for updated technical guidance within the building industry. While the agency typically employs technical writers for such tasks, our involvement was sought due to our practical experience across the building industry. We have worked closely with councils on building consents and with the manufacturing and construction industries on operational improvement, giving us a comprehensive understanding of both legislative requirements and practical building processes. This dual expertise allowed us to contribute not only technical writing skills but also provide valuable practical insights, setting us apart from traditional technical writers as we can participate in the ideation of the documentation required.
We were asked to contribute our expertise in two specific areas:
Remote building inspections for councils
Modular components for the building and construction sectors
Published guidance for councils on remote inspections
New legislation written for offsite modular construction
Roll out of offsite modular construction initiative supported by high quality animated videos produced by the wider Capability Group
Our approach to this project was embedded in thorough research and a deep understanding of the market. For the remote inspections, we began by investigating the latest advancements in video inspection technology, a rapidly evolving field. Our expertise in building inspections, particularly under the building accreditation scheme, enabled us to understand the specific requirements councils need to meet for issuing building consents. By integrating this practical knowledge with our market research, we developed comprehensive guidance for councils on the use of virtual inspection technology. This guidance covered changes in processes, procedures, training, and the skill sets necessary for effective implementation.
For modular components, our approach was similar, involving extensive research to understand global trends and best practices in modular building. Recognising the potential for offsite modular construction to streamline the building process, we focused on developing procedures that would be incorporated into legislation. This legislation was designed to allow accredited builders to use offsite manufacturing techniques, thereby simplifying the building consent process. We ensured the inclusion of stringent controls to prevent the proliferation of substandard housing, thus maintaining quality standards.
For remote building inspections, we proposed guidance to help councils shift from traditional, in-person inspections to a more efficient and safer remote inspection process. A key recommendation was to highlight when remote inspections were the superior option while also providing councils with flexible options to suit different scenarios. The redesign aimed to reduce the time and cost associated with in-person inspections, in both congested urban areas or hard to reach remote locations, give certainty to the building sector while also enhancing health and safety by limiting the number of people on building sites.
